Kickapoo Valley Reserve
WINTER FESTIVAL
January 9, 2010
Daytime activities held at the Kickapoo Valley Reserve Visitor Center (unless otherwise noted)
Highway 131, 2 miles north of La Farge. Activities subject to change due to weather conditions.
8:00 AM - 4:30 PM

Kickapoo Valley Reserve Visitor Center (VC) & Exhibits open
9:00 AM - NOON

Chain Saw Sculpture Demonstration - Dave Watson of Watson Wood's in WI Dells: east of VC
9:00 AM - 3:00 PM

Concessions - Proceeds benefit La Farge Community Child Care Center: VC classroom

Skating, Sledding and Skiing - some equipment available for use

Ciporoke (Chee Poe Doe Kay) or `round dwelling' & Warming Fire - Ho-Chunk Nation

Snow Cave & Warming Fire - Nicholas Gale

Winter Games & Activities - tie-dye snowman, snow croquet, bread pan igloo, etc.
9:30 AM - 11:30 AM

Natural Ice Caves Guided Hike (difficult hiking; steep, slippery, snow, etc.) - Chuck Hatfield
(meet in VC exhibit area for overview & carpool coordination)
10:00 AM - 11:00 AM

Birds of Prey Presentation - Dan Hazlett: VC deck
10:00 AM - 1:00 PM

Face Painting for Kids - La Farge High School Art Students: VC exhibit area

Snow Sculpture Demonstrations - north side of VC

Caricature Drawings - Jason Gerke: VC lobby

Group Kite Flying - bring your own kite; north of VC parking lot

All Ages Archery - La Farge Archery Club: east of VC
10:00 AM - 4:00 PM

Horse-drawn Bobsled Rides - short, scenic route near VC

Snowshoe Exhibit - The Nature of Things: VC exhibit area (some snowshoes available for use)

Tri-state Malamute Club Sled Dog Race followed by Weight Pull: north of main VC parking lot
11:00 AM - 12:30 PM

Chili & Bread Contest - coordinated by La Farge Lions Club ($2/person): VC meeting room
12:30 - 2:30 PM

Kickapoo Quick Auction - Auctioneer Sheriff Gene Cary: Kickapoo Valley goods & services Proceeds benefit the KVR Education Program: VC lobby

Chili and Bread Winners Announced
2:30 - 3:30 PM

Science of Snowflakes - Dan Baumgardt, NWS Meteorologist: VC meeting room
2:45 - 4:30 PM

Driftless Landscape Tour by Horse-drawn Wagon - UWL Geography Professor Colin Belby: First tour at 2:45 pm. Repeat tour at 3:45 pm. Limited seating; pre-register at VC front desk for ticket. (meet shuttle in VC parking lot)

Mutt Race - you bring the dog and child, we provide the sled & harness: north of VC parking lot
7:00 PM - 9:00 PM

Candlelight Hike/Ski - torch lit trails, warming fires, hot chocolate (at Wildcat Mtn State Park)

Winter Astronomy - viewing and interpretation of the night sky (at Wildcat Mtn State Park)
Children must be accompanied by an adult for all Winter Festival activities.
All dogs must be on leash.
