Kickapoo Exchange Coop Flood News--Gays Mills meeting tonightBy borges, Section The Marketplace
The first meeting to discuss the fate of Gays Mills is at the Gays Mills Community Building June 17th at 7 PM.
The manager of the Kickapoo Exchange Coop sent a message to members that is in the full story and provides more details, but below is Erin's hope that all might participate and reach the best decision together:
By participating with an open mind and respect for each other's views, we may be able to create a stronger village community with improved chances of survival, viable economy, responsible land use and river management, and social cohesion. If there ever was a community capable of creative visioning for a successful future, Gays Mills is the place. Here's hoping the community can rise above the extremity of the circumstances and find a positive way forward.
We have survived yet another flood by the skin of our teeth. The flashing held and the sandbags held so no water inside the co-op. But power was out and we could not get everything off site that required refrigeration. That means we lost produce and dairy again--we took at $2200 hit.
At this time, we are still waiting to find out if anything will be covered by insurance. There are a number of things for the membership to be thinking about in terms of the co-op future. The beginnings of a community dialogue are being initiated by the village government about relocation of homes and businesses. The area for relocation mentioned by a village Board member who spoke to me is the area from the Cenex to BAPI. What would it mean for the co-op to move? What would it mean for the co-op to stay? What is our responsibility as an organization that is part of our larger community? How would our choices effect the other residents of the village? How will their choices effect us? We have many questions, many possibilities to consider. And while doing so we must face the emotional consequences of catastrophic flood and even our own attachments to stability and change. I encourage all of our membership to participate in this discussion. By participating with an open mind and respect for each others views, we may be able to create a stronger village community with improved chances of survival, viable economy, responsible land use and river management, and social cohesion. The first meeting to discuss this is at the Gays Mills Community Building June 17th at 7 PM. Respectfully, Erin Martin |
