The recent flooding has all our minds and hearts turned to our neighbors, friends and family.  However, there is another disaster situation in Vernon  County that is virtually ignored and is a constant and now-deepening threat.

Poverty.

And most of the poor are our children - 33.8% of them are living in poverty in Vernon County right now.  Due to budget cuts on the State and Federal level, rapidly rising gas prices, the global food crisis and lack of family-supporting jobs, we are facing an unhealthy and rapidly widening divide between the haves and the have-nots.

One person can't do much of anything.  However, a group of people might be able to provide solutions to some of aspects of poverty.  Please join us on the last Saturday of the months of June, July, and August at 10 a.m. at the Park View Manor Community Room to ponder and implement solutions to poverty.  Everyone is welcome and everyone will be able to speak.

We are not a formal group and are not associated with any institution, church, or government body.  We are only a small group of individuals who see the need to alleviate poverty in the Vernon County area.

For those who wish to participate and have difficulty with transportation, please call Margaret Thielke at 637-6742.
