State Taking Control of WindBy borges, Section City Hall
We all need to write to our representatives in the Wisconsin Legislature regarding AB 899 and SB 544, which will strip away local control over siting huge wind turbine developments. A Montreal company has approached Crawford County with a request for information for their planning studies, for likely over 60 turbines. In Crawford County these will have a highly detrimental effect on our bird and wildlife populations. We are situated in the Mississippi Flyway and millions of birds migrate through or to here every Spring and Fall. The flyway is not neatly situated within the banks of the river, but is a broader river overhead. Not only do these huge towering wind turbines directly affect wildlife by killing birds and bats in flight but they have an indirect affect by fragmenting habitat and altering animal behavior. The Public Service Commission, which will have the power to tell Crawford County where these towers go, is notorious for completely disregarding environmental precautions given to them by DNR and US Fish and Wildlife Staff.
There is a well financed juggernaut in favor of rapid placement of wind farms, wildlife be damned. Please phone or email as soon as possible. The legislature may vote on this in a day or 2. We know how precious our county is. Please do this to help protect it from thoughtless development.
