Outside Money in Politics--Here?

Around here you usually don't think ads will be bought by interests groups for local elections, but if you thought that you would be wrong.  I did a small story about outside money messing up the Supreme Court election on UppityWis and then I find 8 candidates for our county board election in Vernon County being promoted by a group that is--so far--only known for its interfering_ad.  It seems they could throw up a webpage or make a public press release before launching into promoting candidates. In fact some folks in the ad were not aware of the group's effort and could not tell me who they were.

Their advertisement notes that candidates opposing Tom Wilson (14), Dave Ebbert (25) and Phil Hooker (4) are preferred if you care about sustainable agriculture and the environment. It would be hard to make that case with Tom who has worked with Focus on Energy program (and not only that, Tom has worked for years promoting sustainable energy programs, sound transportation policy (see related article soon) and landowner rights against multinational corporate greed) and Dave who works for MOSA, Philip works with Clean Energy Coalition in La Crosse, and they all are campaigning on concern for the environment and keeping family farms on the landscape. Two other candidates, Dan Peper (18) and Joe Swanson (23) are or have been on the Valley Stewardship Network (VSN) board that takes up all manner of environmental issues in the Kickapoo Valley watershed. So do your homework, don't trust the ads out there, and vote this Tuesday, April 1st!

If you vote in the City of Viroqua the full story has sample ballot, so you will know what to expect. If you can't remember your ward, here is a link to city wards and the page to the county supervisory districts is here.

People can post or send in info on the Crawford County races, but my impression is that the county board incumbents are not being contested. I'm not so sure about school districts and town boards. Call the clerk with questions.

All voters will have the Supreme Court choice and referendum on the ballot.
