The Kickapoo Green Builders Guild will be hosting a public forum on building sustainability this Wednesday, November 12 at the Firehouse Restaurant on South Main Street in Viroqua.

Local energy expert Tom Wilson will make a formal presentation titled  "Building Science and Sustainability --History, Present Practice and a View to the Future"

Wilson is a Building Performance Specialist with Residential Energy Services and Home Remedies. He has been inspecting homes and providing sustainable solutions for home- and commercial building owners since 1974. His practice has emphasized upgrading existing homes for improved thermal performance, health, safety, comfort, durability, affordability and energy efficiency. He has co-authored several books and numerous magazine articles, trained hundreds of contractors and made conference presentations all across the nation.

Former Chairman of the Mid-Atlantic Solar Energy Association and consultant to Rodale Press, Wilson did pioneer work in passive solar retrofits and authored widely used energy efficiency rehabilitation guidelines for historic homes.

As a building scientist he helped design and execute numerous research projects for clients such as Oak Ridge National Laboratories, the Electric Power Research Institute, the National Low-income Weatherization Program, and the Energy Center of Wisconsin.

Wilson is a strong believer in diagnostic testing at all stages of the building rehabilitation process. "It is not enough to rely on generalized rules of thumb and text book recommendations on what saves energy and makes a safe and durable home.  Even the commonly used computer models often miss the big stuff. There is a lot of bad information out there."  His views are often controversial and he hopes his presentation will stimulate some heated discussions regarding techniques, materials and what really makes a "green building" green.

The Kickapoo Green Builders Guild is an alliance of designers, builders, contractors, suppliers and consultants dedicated to the creation and maintenance of environmentally sustainable, energy efficient, and non-toxic buildings and homes.

Any interested individuals are welcome to attend this free event. The social gathering will begin at 6:00 with the formal talk and discussion to begin about 6:30.
