On Thursday, July 26 at 7pm, the library will host a "Four Houses" family mystery evening, during which those attending will be able to test their deductive reasoning skills with award-winning science teacher, Russell Gilbert.  Using `mystery clues', players work together to fill in a blank grid representing the four family houses.

These mystery-puzzles were originally conceived by Gilbert in 1984 as a classroom activity for students in his science classes at North Crawford School.   Encouraged to listen, think, communicate & cooperate, the kids loved it.  One eighth-grade student remarked, "Four-House Mysteries help you have fun using your knowledge in a creative way."  Soon the popular game was being marketed as an inter-disciplinary teaching tool, including language arts concepts, social studies and music, at different levels of difficulty, designed for grades 4-12.

For this and other inventive methods of teaching science, such as taking students `in-the-field' monitoring streams, keeping statistics on maple syrup & blackberry jam production, building rockets that really fly, and aerodynamic vehicles that really race, Russell Gilbert received the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science teaching in 1990.  Join the fun of solving a "Four House Mystery" designed for a family evening that's free of charge and open to everyone.
