In the heart of Fall, the library welcomes back our favorite world-renowned, local master chef and culinary lecturer, Monique Jamet Hooker on Tuesday, Nov. 6th at 7pm.
Monique will be sharing tips on seasonal cooking with wild game and we have an interested party who offered to supply some pheasant for a demonstration! www.moniquescuisine.com Soldiers Grove Library Program--October 12By borges, Section Library
October brings a free, library-sponsored, community concert by the University of Wisconsin Madison's premiere women's a cappella choir, "Tangled Up In Blue" at the North Crawford Playhouse (47050 County Road X Soldiers Grove) on Friday, Oct. 12, at 7pm.
These delightful, energetic & formidably talented young women (including our own Zoe Coleman, NC alumna, 2004) perform their own arrangements of popular music, songs most folks will recognize at once. The North Crawford Fine Arts Council will host a reception with refreshments after the 45-minute concert, for those wishing to meet the "ladies in blue". Their new CD comes out in December, and pre-orders are available. http://www.uwtuib.com Book Festival 10/10 to 10/14By borges, Section Library
Image from Caffeinated Politics, link below This festival is in Madison, so might be a bit too out of the way for some, but our LaCrosse_guest_poet_and_poet_interviewer from last month (Max Garland inteviewed by Will Stobbs) will be there and the line up is impressive. Instead of going into details I'm not really familiar with, I offer the Caffeinated_Politics post from a long-time attender who has encyclopedic insight into the event. The Chrysalis Puppet Troupe, presenting an African Masai tale, "Who's In Rabbit's House?" on Sat. Sept. 29th from 10-11am. Delicate string puppets tell this folktale with backround music of a lap harp---a gentle way to start the busy Applefest weekend. Geared for children ages 5-10 years, enjoyed by all.
Grove Library Program -- July 26By borges, Section Library
On Thursday, July 26 at 7pm, the library will host a "Four Houses" family mystery evening, during which those attending will be able to test their deductive reasoning skills with award-winning science teacher, Russell Gilbert. Using `mystery clues', players work together to fill in a blank grid representing the four family houses.
These mystery-puzzles were originally conceived by Gilbert in 1984 as a classroom activity for students in his science classes at North Crawford School. Encouraged to listen, think, communicate & cooperate, the kids loved it. One eighth-grade student remarked, "Four-House Mysteries help you have fun using your knowledge in a creative way." Soon the popular game was being marketed as an inter-disciplinary teaching tool, including language arts concepts, social studies and music, at different levels of difficulty, designed for grades 4-12.
For this and other inventive methods of teaching science, such as taking students `in-the-field' monitoring streams, keeping statistics on maple syrup & blackberry jam production, building rockets that really fly, and aerodynamic vehicles that really race, Russell Gilbert received the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science teaching in 1990. Join the fun of solving a "Four House Mystery" designed for a family evening that's free of charge and open to everyone. Harry Potter--The EndBy PlausibleNews, Section Library
[ed note: So happy to have Skip back...and in such good form...]
My version of the end -- Ron opened his eyes, surprised to find himself still alive. His arm was broken, and he was pinned under a heavy roof beam, but he was still alive. The pain made that perfectly clear. Next to him, he felt Hermione's ragged breathing, though she was still unconscious. He could see that she had also managed to protect herself against the force of the building's collapse, but the strain had finally exhausted her. As the smoke and dust of Hogwarts' implosion died away, three figures could be seen standing amidst the rubble of what had been the Great Hall. Harry. Voldemort. And was that - Neville? The Soldiers Grove Library is very pleased to present Project Fourth Stream, with composer Bill Neil on piano and Tom Gullion on saxophones, in a Sunday afternoon Jazz workshop/concert outdoors in the courtyard behind the library. On July 22, from 2 - 4pm , these world-class musicians will take us to the mysterious world of improvisational jazz.
"Our performances may appear very free but there's actually a lot of work in fine-tuning compositions for improvisation," Guiliion explained. "We'll share our approach by demonstrating how we evolve an idea into a finished performance." Bravo! Bring a lawn chair or blanket, and something cool to sip.
