Welcome to KickTime - News of the Kickapoo Valley, WI

A Driftless Regional web space for Kickapoo Valley news, events and local commerce (like recycling, ride sharing, eating from local sources, buying and supporting local entrepreneurs.)

Visit our Kickapedia site for links to local businesses, farms and services. This is a community wiki (like Wikipedia only smaller) that can be updated by anyone who logs in. The more you join in the better the information and quicker the updates. Don't be shy--if you make a mistake an old version can be restored.

Also try the link to the KickTime_Calendar. We try to keep it as complete, up-to-date and accurate as possible. Please forgive any errors and use the contact information provided for events to double check times and dates.

KickTime is a community project--you are encouraged to submit material. The first step is to create a login account. After logging in, submit your story and it will be reviewed and pushed to the front page within a day or two. See the FAQ for more details about posting material here. If you are totally flummoxed, email the story to admins[at]kicktime[dot]org.

So what do we look for? Events notices are common submissions, but a local view on issues would be a nice change of pace.

  • Please don't submit a reprint of a news story. Instead provide a new perspective or added insight;
  • Bring several views together to create a new way to imagine an issue;
  • Be clever, funny, original;
  • We encourage attitude and self-confidence, but base your writing on facts;
  • If you wish to pass literary or artistic judgment, or discuss the merits or demerits of someone or something, do it with subtlety and intelligence;
  • The more voices here the better!

Too much to ask? Well would you want to spend your precious time reading anything less?

NaNoWriMo and more on Driftless

By borges, Section Library
Posted on Sun Nov 09, 2008 at 08:19:17 PM CST

Briefly, David Rhodes (local author of Driftless details here) was again featured on the national scene last week appearing on the radio show On Point with Tom Ashbrook.  You can hear the interview and call-in program via this link.  A lot of nice reaction to his work about this area and our unique characters.

If you have always wanted to write that novel this is National Novel Writing Month and there is a bit of a writing frenzy going on out there.  The challenge website is here and the tweets about it can be found on a search of the tag #NaNoWriMo.  The tweets are generally about word count totals, so I don't recommend it, but I suppose some folks find some help in the friendly competition. As the website says, they are "Valuing enthusiasm and perseverance over painstaking craft..."

For some it might be the structure they need to get the thing written.  And the end result?  Their website says it best..."Once your novel has been verified by our web-based team of robotic word counters, the partying begins."  'nuf said

Election Day Poem

By borges, Section Library
Posted on Tue Nov 04, 2008 at 11:49:37 PM CST

Originally published in The Leaves of Grass, Walt Whitman wrote this poem on the eve of the election, November 1884.

ELECTION DAY

If I should need to name, O Western World, your powerfulest scene and show,'Twould not be you, Niagara

nor you, ye limitless prairies

nor your huge rifts of canyons, Colorado,

Nor you, Yosemite

nor Yellowstone, with all its spasmic geyserloops ascending to the skies, appearing and disappearing,

Nor Oregon's white cones

nor Huron's belt of mighty lakes

nor Mississippi's stream:

This seething hemisphere's humanity, as now, I'd name-the still small voice vibrating-America's choosing day, (The heart of it not in the chosen-the act itself the main, the quadrennial choosing,) The stretch of North and South arous'd-sea-board and inland-Texas to Maine-the Prairie States-Vermont, Virginia, California, The final ballot-shower from East to West-the paradox and conflict, The countless snow-flakes falling-(a swordless conflict, Yet more than all Rome's wars of old, or modern Napoleon's:) the peaceful choice of all, Or good or ill humanity-welcoming the darker odds, the dross: -Foams and ferments the wine? it serves to purify-while the heart pants, life glows: These stormy gusts and winds waft precious ships, Swell'd Washington's, Jefferson's, Lincoln's sails.

David Foster Smith remembered a little

Sad news that David Foster Smith seemed to succumb to depression on September 12th.  His story conveys what a sensitive soul he was and a short video of his experience in Italy two years ago shows this in a poignant way.

Here is a reading at the 150th anniversary of Harpers Magazine, another reading about "fun" vacations, and a longer_interview with Charlie Rose (second interview that takes the last 35 minutes or so.)

Kirkus Review, "A quiet novel of depth and simplicity."

Poets_and_Writers Sept/Oct 2008, "The triumphant return of a major American Novelist after a thirty-year silence."

The_Isthmus 9/12/08, "Driftless (Milkweed Editions) -- a terrific novel that coalesces around the unexpected connections among people in the fictional community of Words, Wis."

Congratulations to David, our neighbor up in Wonewoc, who is riding a wave of good reviews and lots of attention for his new book Driftless. His publisher, Milkweed editions, is also re-releasing one of his earlier books, Rock Island Line. I would offer my own review, but I still have to get it off Amazon. Of course we will love it!

Books to Prisoners Appeal

By borges, Section Library
Posted on Thu Aug 14, 2008 at 08:25:44 PM CST

Many of you have contacted us, Wisconsin_Book_to_Prisoners,  in the last few days expressing your concern regarding the Department of Corrections current ban on Wisconsin Books to Prisoners/Rainbow Bookstore in Madison.

Wisconsin Books to Prisoners is appealing to you as readers, book lovers and champions of the self-education of all people, to call Governor Jim Doyle (608-266-1212) and John Bett, the DOC administrator (608-240-5104) to express your concern and objection to this ban. Wisconsin is the only state in the U.S. banning books to prisoners.

Essentially, this appeal is about protecting the First Amendment rights of prisoners; freedom to speak includes the right to read (and not just tattered books by Louis L'Amour.)

Thanks so much,

Wisconsin Book to Prisoners

For those of you who may have missed the story, a press release is below the fold...

Soldiers Grove Library Program--July

By borges, Section Library
Posted on Sun Jun 29, 2008 at 08:26:15 AM CST

Hello Dear Friends,

Things are beginning to settle back a bit after our recent bout with flooding, and thankfully, the library here in Soldiers Grove has remained safe & dry once again.

Dedicated crews of volunteers have been helping Maura at the library in Gays Mills,which took in water soaking the carpet and seeping up the walls.  She hopes to be open by mid-July, with fresh paint & a brave smile.

Meantime, the Summer Reading program has begun here and the theme is:

"Catch the Reading Bug" featuring story hour Tuesdays at 10am. Ongoing weekly t-shirt drawings are open to all those who wish to keep track of time spent reading this summer and also to the "independent readers" who are working on the library's "challenge checklist" of creative activities.  The t-shirts, once again, have been designed by Pat Gilbert and hand-painted by a group of library friends.

Sparkling and beautiful, these little incentives continue to be earned & worn proudly year after year; thank you Pat & crew!

We'll conclude our story hour series on July 8th with a visit from Josh Peters, an astounding escape artist & sideshow performer.  Josh will join us outside in the courtyard behind the library for a picnic & fun, starting at 10am.

Also in July we'll have two evening programs related to water...!  Details in the full story...
