Area Cultural EventsWeekend HappeningsBy borges, Section Area Cultural Events
Along with the very beautiful Hiroshima Remembrance in La Crosse we have quite a few arts happenings.
Wilton has the Wood Turtle Festival all weekend. There is a contact phone number in the calendar listing, but no website info available. Main Street Station in Viroqua has loaded up the schedule with a Poetry Slam Friday night and a special guest is Teague_Alexy who seems to have an interesting style...
And then there is Magic_Mama who is an eco-edu-tainer -- ecology educator who is entertaining -- and will have two presentations, one at 10 am and another at 2 pm. Cost is $5 for kids, $10 for adults or $8 in advance. And finally on Sunday Adam_Tanner is coming for a 3 pm concert. His work is not on Youtube much, but he did sit in with The Hunger Mountain Boys on mandolin and was quite good, so here is a view into his musical world...

Poverty Discussion Group at Parkview ManorBy borges, Section Area Cultural Events
The recent flooding has all our minds and hearts turned to our neighbors, friends and family. However, there is another disaster situation in Vernon County that is virtually ignored and is a constant and now-deepening threat.
Poverty. And most of the poor are our children - 33.8% of them are living in poverty in Vernon County right now. Due to budget cuts on the State and Federal level, rapidly rising gas prices, the global food crisis and lack of family-supporting jobs, we are facing an unhealthy and rapidly widening divide between the haves and the have-nots. One person can't do much of anything. However, a group of people might be able to provide solutions to some of aspects of poverty. Please join us on the last Saturday of the months of June, July, and August at 10 a.m. at the Park View Manor Community Room to ponder and implement solutions to poverty. Everyone is welcome and everyone will be able to speak. We are not a formal group and are not associated with any institution, church, or government body. We are only a small group of individuals who see the need to alleviate poverty in the Vernon County area. For those who wish to participate and have difficulty with transportation, please call Margaret Thielke at 637-6742. Rosemary Thielke
