Welcome to KickTime - News of the Kickapoo Valley, WI

A Driftless Regional web space for Kickapoo Valley news, events and local commerce (like recycling, ride sharing, eating from local sources, buying and supporting local entrepreneurs.)

Visit our Kickapedia site for links to local businesses, farms and services. This is a community wiki (like Wikipedia only smaller) that can be updated by anyone who logs in. The more you join in the better the information and quicker the updates. Don't be shy--if you make a mistake an old version can be restored.

Also try the link to the KickTime_Calendar. We try to keep it as complete, up-to-date and accurate as possible. Please forgive any errors and use the contact information provided for events to double check times and dates.

KickTime is a community project--you are encouraged to submit material. The first step is to create a login account. After logging in, submit your story and it will be reviewed and pushed to the front page within a day or two. See the FAQ for more details about posting material here. If you are totally flummoxed, email the story to admins[at]kicktime[dot]org.

So what do we look for? Events notices are common submissions, but a local view on issues would be a nice change of pace.

  • Please don't submit a reprint of a news story. Instead provide a new perspective or added insight;
  • Bring several views together to create a new way to imagine an issue;
  • Be clever, funny, original;
  • We encourage attitude and self-confidence, but base your writing on facts;
  • If you wish to pass literary or artistic judgment, or discuss the merits or demerits of someone or something, do it with subtlety and intelligence;
  • The more voices here the better!

Too much to ask? Well would you want to spend your precious time reading anything less?

Changes on KickTime

There have been some upgrades to the Scoop software that should improve performance and will affect the interface, although I have not explored all the features to see exactly how it is different.

One big improvement is that the Calendar seems to be changed so that it works with MS Explorer.  The header with the month information was programmed using CSS and they changed that to a less elegant header, but it WORKS!

Our fair site has also experienced the intrusion of spammers, at first in the comments and then the upload directory.  As a result all new  users have to email admins at kicktime.org in order to get posting privileges.  Exisiting members will continue to have these functions even if you all don't use them much.  (not to complain...)

I also disabled the upload function because I am not sure if the spammers would find a work around and get their files on our system anyway, so that function is gone, although few of you used it.  If anyone would like to upload an image for a story email admins.

So enjoy your reading here, and know you are welcome to post stories, email me info, or if you are new remember to email for higher privileges.

UppityWis Makes BBCNews Website

Wisconsin Progressive Blog UppityWis made it into the BBC_news_coverage of the upcoming election.  Puts to rest the idea that progressives only live in the city.

Tip of the hat to Uppity!

Fighting Bob Fest 2006 a Great Success

Over 5000 people attended the fest this year.  The weather was a bit colder than usual, but the rain held off and the speakers were a hit. Greg Palast wasn't arrested at the airport as_expected...

One benefit from my time there was getting to know Steve Hanson who runs the state-wide news site UppityWis.  He has the server space to post some of my short audio clips from the 2006 fest.  So if you missed the party, tune into this_story on UppityWis that has pictures and links to audio of Greg Palast, Tom Harkin, and DemocracyNow's Amy Goodman. I think he may have video that will be added later.

At the UppityWis.org booth (that I helped staff) I was happy to talk with folks about the future of using the internet to promote progressive thought and extend its influence.  It was terrific getting perspectives from other administrators of websites and those who spend time surfing on line.  Everyone thought they would like a community site covering their neighborhood and sites like KickTime should be all over the state.

Well maybe I exaggerate a little...

Time for a local Craig's list?

By borges, Section Post Office

If you live in Madison or Eau Claire there is an on line local service called Craigslist.  The Madison version is at this_location and it is a good resource for community cooperation--ride sharing, buying/selling.  The SW region of Wisconsin does have a local bulletin board run by MWT   that can be helpful, but also a bit of a free-for-all.  Would a Kickapoo Craigslist be different?  Could it be sustained with the numbers on line in this region?

Vote in the poll and if there is interest all we have to do is ask for a local section...

I understand this might interest a limited audience, but a couple of high profile bloggers will be in Madison next week.  It requires an RSVP so read on to a link if interested.

Markos Moulitsas of DailyKos and Jerome Armstrong of MyDD are going to be in Madison on May 3 to take part in a panel discussion called "Reforming and Rebuilding the Democratic Party" sponsored by the Madison chapter of Democracy for Wisconsin. DFW is the old Howard Dean volunteer group, and those guys are still going strong!

As a bonus, Lt. Governor Barbara Lawton will give a kickoff speech, and John Nichols will moderate the panel. Should be an interesting night.

The event will be 7 PM May 3 at the Wisconsin Historical Society Auditorium on State St. Here's a link to get more info and reserve tickets:

Markos and Jerome are also scheduled to do a book signing at Rainbow Books on the fourth from six to eight.

Road trip!

Valentine Greetings

Click here to download an mp3 file (music file) of a singing valentine for KickTime readers. These are the voices of the Kickapoo Valley Monthly Meeting (Quaker) children's choir. All the proceeds from this project go to support a Quaker school in El Salvador (San Ignacio School).

The project also brings great joy to Kickapoo area residents who have the pleasure of receiving one. If you would like to support this project send donations to Ellen Brookes c/o the Kickapoo Exchange Food Coop, 209 Main St., Gays Mills, WI 54631. Hope you enjoy this round called Jane Glover.

Technical detail:  the download will be a zip file that should open to an mp3 file that can be played on itunes, realplayer, quicktime, etc.
