Welcome to KickTime - News of the Kickapoo Valley, WI

A Driftless Regional web space for Kickapoo Valley news, events and local commerce (like recycling, ride sharing, eating from local sources, buying and supporting local entrepreneurs.)

Visit our Kickapedia site for links to local businesses, farms and services. This is a community wiki (like Wikipedia only smaller) that can be updated by anyone who logs in. The more you join in the better the information and quicker the updates. Don't be shy--if you make a mistake an old version can be restored.

Also try the link to the KickTime_Calendar. We try to keep it as complete, up-to-date and accurate as possible. Please forgive any errors and use the contact information provided for events to double check times and dates.

KickTime is a community project--you are encouraged to submit material. The first step is to create a login account. After logging in, submit your story and it will be reviewed and pushed to the front page within a day or two. See the FAQ for more details about posting material here. If you are totally flummoxed, email the story to admins[at]kicktime[dot]org.

So what do we look for? Events notices are common submissions, but a local view on issues would be a nice change of pace.

  • Please don't submit a reprint of a news story. Instead provide a new perspective or added insight;
  • Bring several views together to create a new way to imagine an issue;
  • Be clever, funny, original;
  • We encourage attitude and self-confidence, but base your writing on facts;
  • If you wish to pass literary or artistic judgment, or discuss the merits or demerits of someone or something, do it with subtlety and intelligence;
  • The more voices here the better!

Too much to ask? Well would you want to spend your precious time reading anything less?

Blogging about Place Conference

Up in Minneapolis at the Journalism that Matters conference with an emphasis on "place blogging."  It is interesting to meet others who run community sites and it is providing a fair number of interesting ideas.  Tomorrow will be live streamed at this link.  Tune in to the video.  They also twitter up here...although I'm not sure where one would find the time for that.

KickTime News Flash

Nice picture for a News Flash:

Lightning Over Viroqua. Thanks to Tony M for the use of the photo.  See his website here

The news is that the calendar is up and functional. The old one was unreliable with different browsers. The new Google calendar should work, although they may not be fully functional with Safari. They say take your chances.

Many organizations already maintain their calendar on Google. For those out there who lack an online schedule, think about it as a way to get your information out quickly and accurately. If you tell me it exists it can also appear on the KickTime calendar. ( admins[at]kicktime[dot]org )

That's the big news. Might also see a change in the left hand column soon. Send an email about what you want to see there. Most likely change would be links to area organizations and businesses with websites.

New Logo, Ads coming

Hey we got a new logo and I'm working on ClicktoBlue ads being posted up there as a banner.  While the ads will not probably even pay our modest bills, it does bring us into a progressive network that will highlight businesses in synergy with the values of the community.  At least that's what they tell me.

So far no ads have shown up, I might have goofed on installing the code, but what's the rush?

Sorry if you are going to miss the boot and the watch:

h/t to local Rebekah Rotert for the fine design work on the logo.

Kicktime.org is banned?!

Here's an interesting story that highlights some blogs that were banned by the Department of Veterans Affairs in the State of Wisconsin. It is a bit of an old story, but I just happened on it and scanning down the list, there is KickTime.org. I suppose someone in the Department was reading about our fair valley and the computer administrators decided that was not worth company, or more accurately government time.

I think it might be a good thing to get a veteran's section on KickTime and have Ed Barlow put together some of his insightful research on the subject. Any other veterans with perspective can join in any time.

Hey anyone can join in. Make a login account, send me an email at admins[at-sign]kicktime.org and I will promote you so you can post stories, comments, polls. Questions? No problem, I love questions.

Surrender to Technology

I recently approved a couple new RSS feeds for KickTime and thought a shout out about it was in order.  The first is a photo_blog I have highlighted   before.  A recent picture of the day is below:

And then there is the RSS from the Kickapoo_Free_Press, so if you don't have access to the print paper it is all conveniently online.  If you go to your user preferences and the interface section at the bottom, then you can check the feeds you want and they will appear on the KickTime front page right column.  This helps to collect the latest information from various websites in one place.  Of course if you are far enough along to have a feed reader, all the better.

Notes on the Blogging Business

By borges, Section Post Office

Writing for a blog is kind of odd work. It is not journalism for the most part, but a something-else. What that might include is evolving as more people engage in personal, political and community blogging. WPR inteviewed Scott Gant, former counsel for The New Republic and author of "We're All Journalists Now" (The Free Press.) That program (audio stream of it is here) questioned whether bloggers and filmmakers should be considered journalists. Mr. Gant maintained that the traditional role and definiton of a journalist must be re-examined. Meanwhile a Wisconsin blog called Crawfordstake posted a brief_piece about "if you are paid to blog, you aren't a blogger." This one caught my eye, since no one associated with KickTime is paid and as far as I can tell no one will ever be paid to produce content here. So is that good?

I think it is important that there is an outlet for community voice and announcement that is not tied to a sponsor. Once money enters the equation the message gets distorted, or at least limited. I believe grassroots volunteer blogging will catch on, and as it catches we will prevail as an important part of what is necessary to maintain a democratic society that has been all but bought from politicos to journalists. Some journalists complain about lack of accountability in the blogosphere (I really do hate that word)--we don't use "real" names, switch identities, change content at will, and are not "real" journalists. Follow on to the full story to get my take on these issues...

Post Office--Changes on the Site

By borges, Section Post Office
Posted on Mon Jan 29, 2007 at 12:02:26 PM CST

The Kickapoo Cultural Exchange (KCE) non-profit corporation has agreed to partner with KickTime.  They will soon take ownership of the domain name and could be a conduit for tax-deductible contributions.  The KCE board manages the community space in back of the Gays Mills Coop, and provides a non-profit umbrella for local charitable efforts. They support the idea of communicating news and events in the Kickapoo Valley and realize the internet is one good way to make it happen.  Their support of the site does not mean that they endorse all the views presented--the person making the post is the owner of the opinions expressed.

Another change non-profit regulations necessitate is that Kicktime cannot be used for political activity/endorsement.  We can have our take on the news, but cannot officially endorse or organize for candidates.  As a result the Democratic Party section has been taken down and stories that contained endorsements/fundraiser information have been deleted.

A final change is the member Oikos has joined on as an editor and will provide news and events from areas south of Viroqua.  He will also return from the march on Washington DC with video that will be posted as soon as bus-lag allows.

All in all it has been a good few months of change and I hope we can continue to include new perspectives and energy through 2007.  Perhaps even someone editing events in the LaFarge/Hillsboro area?
