A Brief History of Disbelief--5/25 earlyBy borges, Section Templum
Quite a while ago I heard about a PBS series on atheism entitled A Brief History of Disbelief. It had good reviews and so I looked to see when Wisconsin PBS would air it. Alas, the powers there took a pass on the show. Until now. I just received this email from Angie Whitiken:
Thank you for contacting Wisconsin Public Television regarding "A Brief History of Disbelief." This program will air on May 25, 2008 from 6:00 am to 9:00 am.So fire up those video recorders or TIVO it-reports are it is quite well done. Apparently it can't compete with those auctions and Irish tenors and self-help gurus that need infomercial time on PBS these days. Interfaith Evening for Peace -- 5/9By borges, Section Templum

[from NRCAT, National Religious Campaign Against Torture] An important vote is going to take place tomorrow, Wednesday, February 13. The Senate will decide whether we stop the CIA's use of "enhanced interrogation techniques" -- or as we would call them, torture. Section 327 of the Intelligence Authorization Conference Report (H.R. 2082), would prohibit the CIA from using abusive interrogation techniques (such as waterboarding) by requiring the CIA to comply with the Army Field Manual while conducting interrogations. The Army Field Manual prohibits torture and cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment. Please call your Senators now -- and urge them to support Section 327 of the Intelligence Authorization conference report. Call the Capitol switchboard at 202-224-3121 and ask to be connected to your Senators' offices. You can also go to the NRCAT website and click on the link in the upper right red box. It will take you to a page that makes it easy to email your Senators. This is the most important anti-torture legislation now before Congress with a real chance of passage. (The House has already passed this bill.) Every phone call counts. Thank you for all that you do to end U.S.-sponsored torture. Sincerely,
Linda Gustitus, NRCAT President
(1 comment) Comments >> Evolution Weekend -- February 8-10By borges, Section Templum
The Clergy_Letter_Project is a national organization comprised of more than 11,000 clergy and founded to help demonstrate to the public that religion and science need not be at war with each other. The hope is that many religious groups around the country will join with colleagues from around the world in a simple but meaningful event sponsored by The Clergy Letter Project: Evolution Weekend 2008 (8-10 February 2008). This event is an opportunity for congregations around the world to take the time to discuss the compatibility of religion and science.
The goal of Evolution Weekend is two-fold. First, to demonstrate that those outspoken fundamentalists who assert that people have to choose between religion and science are not speaking for many religious leaders. Second, participants want to elevate the quality of the discourse on this important topic. Evolution Weekend began two years ago and was originally named Evolution Sunday. These first two annual events were incredibly successful, with participation across the two years increasing by more than 30 percent. Additionally, the events have received significant national and international media attention which has helped spread the word. The name has changed to Evolution Weekend this year in an attempt to be fully welcoming to members of all religions.
You can view the list of participants and read more about Evolution Weekend here.

Rambling around the net I found that there is a picture of the day feature on Wikipedia. You can subscribe to it, or just check it from time to time for interesting photos. They are nominated/voted in from the many images on Wikipedia. This one is from the December collection...
The interior of the Neue Wache, the central memorial of Germany for victims of war and tyranny. Located in Berlin, the building was originally built as a guardhouse, and has been used as a war memorial since 1931. The statue, Mother with her Dead Son is directly under the oculus, and so is exposed to the rain, snow and cold, symbolising the suffering of civilians during World War II.
