Welcome to KickTime - News of the Kickapoo Valley, WI

A Driftless Regional web space for Kickapoo Valley news, events and local commerce (like recycling, ride sharing, eating from local sources, buying and supporting local entrepreneurs.)

Visit our Kickapedia site for links to local businesses, farms and services. This is a community wiki (like Wikipedia only smaller) that can be updated by anyone who logs in. The more you join in the better the information and quicker the updates. Don't be shy--if you make a mistake an old version can be restored.

Also try the link to the KickTime_Calendar. We try to keep it as complete, up-to-date and accurate as possible. Please forgive any errors and use the contact information provided for events to double check times and dates.

KickTime is a community project--you are encouraged to submit material. The first step is to create a login account. After logging in, submit your story and it will be reviewed and pushed to the front page within a day or two. See the FAQ for more details about posting material here. If you are totally flummoxed, email the story to admins[at]kicktime[dot]org.

So what do we look for? Events notices are common submissions, but a local view on issues would be a nice change of pace.

  • Please don't submit a reprint of a news story. Instead provide a new perspective or added insight;
  • Bring several views together to create a new way to imagine an issue;
  • Be clever, funny, original;
  • We encourage attitude and self-confidence, but base your writing on facts;
  • If you wish to pass literary or artistic judgment, or discuss the merits or demerits of someone or something, do it with subtlety and intelligence;
  • The more voices here the better!

Too much to ask? Well would you want to spend your precious time reading anything less?

Sibby Article in Grit Magazine

Grit magazine covered our local Sibby's organic ice cream factory and restaurant in the Nov/Dec issue.  The article is entitled "Ice Cream Saved the Farm" and provides a nice summary of Sibby's success.  Grit has a very aggressive pop-up system trying to get subscriptions--who can blame them I suppose--but I mention it for those easily annoyed.  They also used a picture worth re-publishing.

VIROQUA, Wis. - If you are a producer or grower of local foods in southwest Wisconsin and are looking to sell product to grocery stores, make plans now to attend a Nov. 14 workshop that will share information on how to establish buyer connections.

Food Marketing Essentials: Accessing Local Markets is a fast-paced workshop offering producers the keys to selling local foods. The event will take place Nov. 14 at Western Technical College in Viroqua. Registration starts at 9:30 a.m., with speakers and information presented from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. A local foods lunch and all materials are provided. Cost is $20.

To register, contact Jeanne Carpenter, Local Foods Consultant, 608-358-7837 or email Jeanne@wordartisanllc.com. Pre-registration is required and is due Nov. 4. Get a copy of the registration form here or in the full story.

Keynote speakers include:

    * Heather Hilleren, Founder, Greenleaf Market. Hilleren has built a national network for producers and buyers of local foods at www.greenleafmarket.com. Learn how this tool can help your business grow to the next level.
    * Walking the Walk Panel Discussion: Several local entrepreneurs -  farmers Cate & Mat Eddy, Ridgeland Harvest Farm, Viroqua; retailer Jan Rasikas, Viroqua Food Cooperative; chef Monique Hooker; and local Farm to School organizers Jessica Luhning and Marilyn Volden  - will share their stories and advice on how to sell local foods to retailers, chefs and institutions.
    * Jeanne Carpenter, Local Foods Consultant. Carpenter has surveyed grocery stores across the state and developed a report providing insight on grocery store product and delivery needs, quality and pricing issues, timing needs of buyers and their local foods philosophy. This report will be shared with all participants. In addition, Carpenter will work with participants to develop an action plan to implement what producers learn at the seminar once they get home.

All attendees will also receive a printed copy of the new Wisconsin Local Food Marketing Guide: A Producer's Guide to Marketing Locally Grown Food, published this month as part of the workshop project.
The workshops are sponsored by a grant from the North Central Risk Management Education Center,
the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade & Consumer Protection, the Wisconsin Grocers Association & UW Extension Emerging Ag Markets Team.

"Persistence, optimism, creativity and the willingness to seek mentors are important for young entrepreneurs", Ben Casnocha told the one hundred fifty high school students who recently attended Youth Entrepreneurship Day in Viroqua.  The event was coordinated by Sue Noble, Director of Vernon Economic Development Association and Laura Brown, Community Development Educator for Crawford County UW Extension.

Entrepreneurs should take action and not find excuses to not get started on their ideas.  Casnocha stressed. "Do something, then make corrections when you see what you are doing is wrong," he said. "A lot of great companies start with a "mediocre" idea by somebody who takes "baby steps" in starting action on that idea, makes some failures and then makes adjustments," he added. "A big problem in most companies and most lives is too much talk, too little do. So go start accumulating unique experiences. Have a business idea? Jump in. Start something!"

Ben Casnocha is a Silicon Valley-based entrepreneur, author, and college student. Currently twenty years old, he serves on the board of Comcate, an e-government technology firm he founded at the age of fourteen.  He is the author of the book "My Start-Up Life: What a (Very) Young CEO Learned on His Journey Through Silicon Valley".
