Welcome to KickTime - News of the Kickapoo Valley, WIA Driftless Regional web space for Kickapoo Valley news, events and local commerce (like recycling, ride sharing, eating from local sources, buying and supporting local entrepreneurs.) Visit our Kickapedia site for links to local businesses, farms and services. This is a community wiki (like Wikipedia only smaller) that can be updated by anyone who logs in. The more you join in the better the information and quicker the updates. Don't be shy--if you make a mistake an old version can be restored. Also try the link to the KickTime_Calendar. We try to keep it as complete, up-to-date and accurate as possible. Please forgive any errors and use the contact information provided for events to double check times and dates. KickTime is a community project--you are encouraged to submit material. The first step is to create a login account. After logging in, submit your story and it will be reviewed and pushed to the front page within a day or two. See the FAQ for more details about posting material here. If you are totally flummoxed, email the story to admins[at]kicktime[dot]org. So what do we look for? Events notices are common submissions, but a local view on issues would be a nice change of pace.

Friday Web Picks (page 3)Friday Web Picks--RNC Protests and ReactionBy borges, Section Friday Web Picks
Posting this information in part because the mainstream news has ignored the protests at the RNC, and also because there were plenty from the Kickapoo Valley taking a stand against war up there, and so here is the best off the web I could find. I have a contact in St. Paul who will alert me to the availability of some student videos (soon I hope) and those will be added below the fold later.
Here is video of the "Flash, Bang and Mass Arrests"
Here is the protester-side of the story and here is the police-side that maintains they were certain the protesters were going to "use arson to disrupt the convention, to take out parts of downtown St. Paul..." A final link is to a story trying to make sense of "Is this security or repression?" The final quote sums up the importance of deciphering the situation: Bruce Nestor of the National Lawyers Guild, one of the attorneys representing the eight in the initial phase, called it, "overcharging what at most was an expressed intention to block traffic. My concern is they are going to convict people for their political beliefs."
Friday Web Picks--New PhonesBy borges, Section Friday Web Picks
The BBC ran a spoof, ala I'm a Mac and I'm a PC, about the Nokia Smartphone versus the Apple iPhone. It ends where most in the valley would have it...this is more than I need/can get service for.
And now there is another interesting phone that has a Linux kernel that can be anything you want it to be...OpenMoko. It will be cheaper, more flexible--if you want a more complicated platform than a simple cellphone. h/t JohnC...
It is certainly a nice change from the lockdown of the iPhone that makes it unusable where we live. Gotta brush up on Linux. For a discussion with the developer of OpenMoko and a non-tech-guy interviewer, see the Full Story....

Here's an idea on new wind power that is worth a look. Various friends have mentioned their desire for a wind turbine on their home in the city. This stuff might actually be feasible some day.
Look at it here. And there are lots of links once you get there. Friday Night Web Picks--Reaching for the out of reachBy borges, Section Friday Web Picks
Odd pick this week. Reaching for the out of reach is a series of stereo photos re-rendered on a webpage. The artist's statement reads:
i'm breathing new life into the past using old digitized photographs from the new york public library. i've spent hours rekindling these moments. & they will not be the last. i'm so so deep on these funny little things... it's like the past has rediscovered a dimension!
And so the past in 3D, and my personal favorite is the chickens. Friday Night Web Picks--Glenn Donovan TributeBy borges, Section Friday Web Picks
Glenn Donovan was a spark of human being and joyful presence in the Kickapoo Valley until his too early passing last January. His final work will be on offer tomorrow as part of the Mineral Point Gallery Night. Details follow from here:

His website. Friday Night Web Picks--Election WatchesBy borges, Section Friday Web Picks
I hope everyone is excited about the national election coming up in November. Candidate do-dads, signs, buttons and bumper stickers are turning up everywhere, but none can compare to the Waving_Candidate_Watches that are now on offer over the web.
Whether you are for McCain or Obama, or even have nostalgic support for Hillary (her watch is not the most flattering they could have come up with...) it is all on offer and just a click away. Friday Night Web Picks--Vandals and ElitesBy borges, Section Friday Web Picks
Seems a trend these days that some folks with spray paint cans can't get enough of putting their two cents out there in that unpleasant way. From cemeteries/parks (1, 2, 3) to the Democratic_Party_HQ (video and pictures from Channel_8) in this area we see a need to vent writ large (literally.)
The pattern here is a bit difficult to read with any certainty. But the comments after the above linked-to stories show a distinct pattern. A familiar culture war that plays out in this rural part of Wisconsin as it does across the nation. More in the full story...
