Green Charter School Conference and Tia Nelson CommentsBy borges, Section Hills and Valleys
Below is an editorial written by Tia Nelson, daughter of Earth Day founder Gaylord Nelson.
Tia describes the significance of the emerging green charter schools sector in public education. Meet Tia at the first Green Charter Schools National Conference in Madison, WI on November 7-8 website here THE REAL WEALTH OF THE NATION by Tia Nelson Wisconsin has long been an incubator for prescient ideas about the connection between human society and the natural environment. John Muir's boyhood in the backwoods near Portage, Wis., provided a foundation for his early leadership in a dawning environmental protection movement. A Sand County Almanac, Aldo Leopold's description of the area around his Sauk County, Wis., home, has inspired natural stewardship throughout the world and is required reading for anyone with an interest in conservation. My father, the late U.S. Sen. Gaylord Nelson, launched the first Earth Day on April 22, 1970, as an annual day of observance and nationwide teach-in about environmental issues because he recognized the significance of educating children and young adults about the natural world. Today, as we reap the effects of pernicious economic activity, a failing energy policy and atmospheric warming, I find my father's words both foreboding and reassuring:
"Forging and maintaining a sustainable society is The Challenge for this and all generations to come. At this point in history, no nation has managed to evolve into a sustainable society. We are all pursuing a self-destructive course of fueling our economies by drawing down our natural capital--that is to say, by degrading and depleting our resource base--and counting it on the income side of the ledger. ... [T]he real wealth of a nation is its air, water, soil, forests, rivers, lakes, oceans, scenic beauty, wildlife habitats, and biodiversity." More in the full story...

Sibby Article in Grit MagazineBy borges, Section The Marketplace
Grit magazine covered our local Sibby's organic ice cream factory and restaurant in the Nov/Dec issue. The article is entitled "Ice Cream Saved the Farm" and provides a nice summary of Sibby's success. Grit has a very aggressive pop-up system trying to get subscriptions--who can blame them I suppose--but I mention it for those easily annoyed. They also used a picture worth re-publishing.
Saturday Night Music--KEXP and Dying is FineBy borges, Section Saturday Night Music
Ah the complicated web that we weave in the intertubes. So the story of this music is I had heard Dying is Fine by Ra Ra Riot on the World Cafe (posted about that here) and then late last night I'm watching Twitter on my newly downloaded Spaz (open source means free/fair use) and stankey tweets that KEXP Song of the Day Podcast is the best. So I go look there and yesterday's podcast was Dying is Fine. I have a particular interest in that song because the words are from an ee cummings poem--I know it will be hard to believe, but I studied the poem and got an article published in a psych journal...Really. So here is a nice live version off YouTube and I agree with stankey that KEXP has a very interesting daily feed.
